Geocaching in Blue Mound

Geocaching is a kind of high tech treasure hunt for the whole family.  Using a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver, you take coordinates that are posted on the internet and look for containers all over the country.  These containers range from smaller than a film canister to a large ammo can or large Tupperware-like container.

Inside these capsules (caches) are usually little trinkets that you can trade for.  There is also a log sheet where you can log your find.  After you have found the cache, you could go back to the internet and log your find there as well.  A popular place to start is Geocaching.com*

The general rules are:

  • No guns, knives, or explosives are allowed

  • Do not trade anything that is prohibited to minors (tobacco, certain magazines)

  • If you want to take something you must leave something of equal or greater value

  • The cache can not be buried (covering with leaves and bark is, however, allowed and encouraged)

Geocaches in Blue Mound State Park

Blue Fox* is a cache placed in cooperation with the Friends and tells the story of one of our most popular residents.
Troll's Secret Diary* is another fine cache that takes hikers to one of the more scenic areas of the park.

You may also want to check out A Bear's Journey,* which is a Travel Bug.  Travel Bugs are a variation on the geocaching hobby.
