Geocaching in Blue Mound

Geocaching is a kind of high tech treasure hunt for the whole family. Using a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver, you take coordinates that are posted on the internet and look for containers all over the country. These containers range from smaller than a film canister to a large ammo can or large Tupperware-like container.

Inside these capsules (caches) are usually little trinkets that you can trade for. There is also a log sheet where you can log your find. After you have found the cache, you could go back to the internet and log your find there as well. A popular place to start is Geocaching.com*

The general rules are:

No guns, knives, or explosives are allowed
Do not trade anything that is prohibited to minors (tobacco, certain magazines)
If you want to take something you must leave something of equal or greater value
The cache can not be buried (covering with leaves and bark is, however, allowed and encouraged)

Geocaches in Blue Mound State Park

Blue Fox* is a cache placed in cooperation with the Friends and tells the story of one of our most popular residents.
Troll's Secret Diary* is another fine cache that takes hikers to one of the more scenic areas of the park.
